Battery CT inspection

Advanced CT inspection study for lithium-ion batteries, identifying defect detection capabilities and future production opportunities.

Battery Particle Scan

The customer's challenge

A leading battery manufacturer wanted to investigate whether X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) could be used for automated quality inspection of lithium-ion cells in a production environment. The key challenge was achieving reliable defect detection while meeting industrial throughput requirements.

Sioux's contribution

Sioux developed a simulation-driven feasibility study covering imaging physics, CT system design, defect detectability, and software architecture. Multiple hardware configurations were evaluated to determine the optimal balance between resolution, speed, and cost.

Result

By gaining clear insight into the capabilities and limitations of CT-based battery inspection, the client could make well-informed investment decisions with significantly lower technical risk. The study helped focus future development on the most promising inspection concepts, creating a solid foundation for improving product quality, increasing confidence in manufacturing processes, and accelerating the adoption of advanced inspection technology in battery production.
